BRANCHING ROOTS REVIEW

Recording veteran, Paul Clark, digs deeper into the soil with his 20th solo release, "Branching Roots". Burrowing into 11 new compositions with Clark, and his vast array of vintage string and percussion instruments, are the exquisite talents of multi-Award winning fiddler and mandolinist, Stuart Duncan; guitar legend and longtime recording friend, Phil Keaggy; veteran upright bass players, Byron House and Matt Pierson; old school pedal steel player, Tom Killen; rising Resophonic picker, Ian O'Bryant and gritty background vocalist, Charity Mozafari. Mixed by Todd Robbins, mastered by Reuben Cohen of Lurssen Mastering, and the vinyl lacquers mastered by the iconic Ron McMaster at Capitol Records, Branching Roots will likely cause a thirst for a water that can quench the driest of souls.

whistle

An old man with long gray whiskers came through the train cars selling popcorn, chewing gum and candy. "Hey!" said one of his customers. "I thought young boys were supposed to do your job."

"I was a boy when this train started." (Thomas W. Jackson, 1903).

Returning to his early 70's musical roots, when he was a young boy with long red whiskers, but stirring in depth and maturity from a time tested perspective, Paul Clark's songs continue to affirm that the beauty of the sojourn is not confined to the final destination. With 18 recordings resonating from the platform of his discography, his deep convictions on "Down At The Whistle Stop," will take you on a journey far beyond a one blink station. Don't be lulled into thinking this is just "another record" from a CCM pioneer trying to live out the string. On the contrary, Clark's fires, musically and lyrically, as well as his supporting cast of veterans, are freshly stoked. Always enthusiastic about riding the rails of life, you can understand why he is sanctioned to say, "I was a boy when this train started."  All aboard!

Approaching Jerusalem(MVM-017)
APPROACHING JERUSALEM; TRIUMPHAL
ENTRY; REMEMBRANCE; GETHSEMANE.....LANTERNS,
TORCHES, WEAPONS; TETELASTAI; HADES; ANABAINO; THE
PROMISE OF MY FATHER
As a scent enters the room before one
beholds its presence, so is Paul's new artfully
dramatic and highly innovative recording project
"Approaching Jerusalem."
Paul  holds up his end of the term "pilgrim" as
he paints sonic landscapes and minimal lyric
compositions, all the while inviting the listener to
travel with him on a journey of the last days of
Jesus Christ on earth.
The tracks are largely cinematic in feel. Stellar
musicianship flows from Paul, Phil Keaggy, Jay
Pfeifer, Rod Lincoln, Don Harris, Kevin Rogers and
Pedro Eustache.(Main woodwind player for "Passion of
The Christ" by Mel Gibson).
"Tetelastai" (pr. Tuh-tell-uh-sty) , the Greek word
for "It is Finished," is an epic song and the aorta
of the recording project! Rivaling the quality of
Peter Gabriel, or Sting, the production is first
class.

 contemporary Christian music albums.  Musically
it has a mellow blend of songs, many of which
 emphasize Paul's acoustic guitar playing.
Lyrically it has a message saturated with the good
news of Jesus Christ.  From the testimonial
"Looking Glass Incident" to the uplifting "We'll
Soon Be Going Home", this album helped strengthen
many new believers of the early 70's "Jesus Movement"

touring with the group Love Song, Paul's music was flavored
with the musical talents of Phil Keaggy on guitar, Jay Truax
on bass, and John Mehler on drums.  Along with Bill
Speer and Mike Burkhart, these six borthers brought a new
dimension to Christian Music.  The song :Come Into His
Presence" is a creative invitation to the freedom of Jesus Christ.

blistering guitar work and fresh compositions abound.

SONGS: HAND TO THE PLOW; HELP ME TO SEE; ALL I NEED: SHIPWRECK; LOVE YOU SO;
SPRING OF LIFE; WOMAN/THE MAN THAT I LOVE; NOW AND FOREVERMORE;ONE FINAL WORD
Recorded in August of 1976. Paul’s propensity to explore new music
genres brought a painful close to Paul Clark & Friends,
whose strong community and sonic signatures had established
him as a veteran voice in the growing CCM scene. Unafraid of
change, Paul's set his plow into the rich soil of his
childhood R&B roots. Moving his compositional skills away
from guitar and to the piano for farming the new “Jazz/R&B
sound field,” with Paul joined forces with fellow Kansas
City native and guitarist, Curt Bartlett, and Oklahoma-City
musicians Hadley Hockensmith (Guitar and Bass), Harlan
Rogers (Piano, B3 Organ and Synthesizers), Lanny Hansen
(Drums), and Jim Hochanadel, (Saxaphone and Harmonica). Paul
had met Hadley, Harlan and Bill Maxwell, years earlier in
Oklahoma City, as the 3rd Street Rhythm and Blues
Band, and knew they would be instrumental in his desired
musical change.
Beyond the muscle bound title track, which included an unprecedented
seven-minute plus jam session, and the other infectious
grooves, Paul unveiled an orchestral side to his
multifaceted songwriting expertise. With the Oklahoma City
Philharmonic musicians playing the lush arrangements of
conductor David Powell, Paul's powerful wedding songs,
"Woman/The Man That I Love,"  (a duet with the undiscovered
Kelly Willard), and "Now And Forevermore," quickly became
two more classic wedding songs of the Jesus Movement
generation
Engineered and mixed by Bobby Cotton and mastered by Hollywood Mastering
Lab genius, Doug Sax, this project is a landmark record
classic firmly established in the foundation of CCM history.

Change In The Wind(MVM-006)

SONGS: CHANGE IN THE WIND; OUNCE OF PREVENTION; HE WOULDN'T LIE; ME IN YOU;
COME ON; CALLED MY NAME; ARE YOU STILL WITH US?; ENCOUNTER
AT CANEEL BAY; COME BACK HOME.
Digging  his musical discs deeper into the fertile soil of his
Jazz/R&B sound, Paul made sure his rock roots would still be
part of the hybrid sound that he was cultivating. With the
solid "Hand To The Plow" cast on hand, Paul added Drummer,
Bill Maxwell, Percussionist, Keith Edwards, Arp 2600
Synthesizer genius, Richard Bugg, Guitarist, Don Juntnen,
and the sassy BG Vocal combo of Judith Cotton and Rhenda
Edwards to his repertoire.
Recorded in 1978 by Bobby Cotton at Associated Recorders in Oklahoma City,
mixed at Hollywood Sound by John Guess, and mastered by
legendary audio file expert, Bernie Grundman, new fruit was
growing in Paul’s field of music adventure.

Aim for the Heart

Aim For The Heart(MVM-007)
SONGS: DEATH IN THE CITY/OPPORTUNITY; ANOTHER VICTIM;  IT’S STILL OPEN;  ORACLE;

AIM FOR THE HEART;  DON’T BE A FOOL FOR PRIDE; TRANSFORMATION;  YOUR LOVING; AUTHOR OF LOVE.
1980
was a pivotal year in the history of CCM. The Jesus Movement
had officially lost its childlike innocence. Concern for a
movement that seemed to be moving more toward “cross-over”
entertainment than ministry, Paul took the same cast of
musicians and added bass player extraordinaire, Abraham
Laborial, as well as saxaphone veteran, Ernie Watts, to add
muscle to his jazz-fusion, ministry rich compositions.
Percussion was played by Keith Edwards and synthesizer
overdubs were played by Michael Escalante. Established L.A.
session background vocalists Phyliss St. James, Kathy Hazard
and James Felix added sizzle to the groovin’ tracks.
The project closes
with two mellow ballads, “Your Loving” and, another wedding
song duet classic, “Author Of Love,” once again, featuring
Kelly Willard and Paul.
Produced by
Paul, engineered by Bobby Cotton, additional overdubs
were recorded by Paul, Dan Willard, Ross Pallone and
Jonathan David Brown. A&M Records legend, Bernie
Grundman mastered the project to take Paul’s sounds to
new sonic heights.

A New Horizon

SONGS: TELL THEM ALL; BREAKAWAY; BROKEN FOOL; THE ONE YOU LOVE; HE’LL USE ME; EVERY BREATH; HERE TO STAY; HOLD ON; DISTANT SHORE; MORE THAN SURVIVORS.

With a growing family of three children and the desire to plant a new
fellowship in Kansas City, it made sense for Paul to abandon the
L.A. scene. Longtime friend, and music partner, Phil Keaggy, and
his wife, Bernadette, moved into his house for a season while
they searched for a home and answers to her tragic pregnancy
issues. Curt Bartlett recruited Jim DeLong and Lee Jones from
Seattle, who, along with local woodwindist/keyboardist Dan
Murdock, formed the band, “Crossection.”.
Lacking the depth of
the previous Hollywood recording sessions, but basking in the
warmth of local fellowship sunshine, Phil Keaggy added tasty
guitar licks to the developing sounds of Crossection.
Produced by Paul, and
engineered by Bobby Cotton at Sound Recorders in KC, but knowing
that the recording would be mastered by A&M Records mastering
guru, Bernie Grundman, the background vocals were crooned at
Paramount Studios in L.A. by Kelly Willard, Michelle Pillar,
Bruce Hibbard, Shauna Rogers, Howard and Charity McCrary. Once
again, Paul penned another covenant wedding classic. The duet
with Kelly Willard on “Here To Stay,” added another composition
to his covenant song repertoire.

Drawn to the Light

SONGS: DRAWN TO THE LIGHT; GIVE THEM YOUR LOVE; STAND UP AND BELIEVE; HOW MUCH MORE CAN YOU TAKE; CARRY ME ON; GOOD, GOOD MORNING; THE CALM, THE STORM, THE EYE OF THE STORM; A HEARTBEAT AWAY; GOOD, GOOD NIGHT.

Recorded at Weddington Studios in 1982, Paul’s return to high quality recording in
California is immediately evident in the opening, radio hit, title track. This was the fourth consecutive project that featured him composing primarily at the piano and the songs display the strength of his music theory disciplines.
Accompanied by a cast of new and old musical friendships,
Carlos Rios, Leon Gaer, Hadley Hockensmith, Phil Keaggy,
Steve Tavaglione, Michael Fisher, Rob Watson, Keith Edwards and Mark Cargill, along with the dynamic background vocals of Debbie McClendon, Howard Smith, Phyliss St. James, Bruce Hibbard, Judith Cotton and Leisa Hibbard, made every track crisp and intentional.
Produced by Paul, engineered by Bobby Cotton, Wally Grant and Mike Ross, and groomed by the emerging mastering skills of Steve Hall, the project draws the listener to the light of Jesus Christ.

Out of the Shadow

SONGS: GIVE ME YOUR HEART; MR. ME; OUT OF THE SHADOW; 1984; IT’S YOU; THE MINSTREL’S VOYAGE; I WILL FLY (In The Wind); I NEED YOUR LOVE AGAIN; LOVE OF MY LIFE; FATHER GOD.

Recorded in February of 1983 at Weddington Studios, by Bobby Cotton and Wally Grant, Paul ratched it up another notch through the powerful teamwork of Carlos Rios, Leon Gaer, Mike Baird, Phil Keaggy, Smitty Price, Brandon Field and Michael Fisher.
Adding punch to the tracks is the dynamic background vocal blend of Paul with “Mr. Mister” buddies, Richard Page and Steve George. Additional background vocals were by Tommy Funderburk, Phyliss St. James and Alfie Silas.Adding to the lengthening list of Paul’s wedding covenant compositions,“Love Of My Life,” is another Paul Clark/Kelly Willard duet centered around the cup and the bread of communion with Jesus Christ.

Mixed by legendary engineer, Bill Schnee, and mastered by Doug Sax at The Mastering Lab,
Out of the Shadow reached the apex of Paul’s desires in this
music genre. Change was soon to come.

Awakening From The Western Dream(MVM-011)

Songs: More Heat Than Light; Everywhere I Turn; You Can’t Accuse Me; I Can Feel Your Heartbeat;Marianna; So They Say; 1NA100; Foxhole Confession; Don’t Let Go Of My Heart; As Long As I’m Still Breathing.

After the awkward “Mr. Me” campaign to the “Out Of The Shadow” project that Word Records organized to raise his market place presence, Paul’s convictions led him to abandon the commercially and competitively driven CCM industry and head back to his roots. Always a believer that life has to be lived out before change can be displayed with authenticity. Paul’s new musical expressions were now flowing from the well of reconnecting with his love of the guitar.  Recorded in 1988, after five years of recording silence, Paul harnessed his friends, Steve George, Steve Ferris and Pat Mastelloto, from the chart topping band, “Mr.Mister,” to his KC buddies, Don Harris and Rod Lincoln, and called the band, “Point-o-Vu.” The independent label project allowed Paul’s to express fresh poetic composition to his recording history without the confinement of CCM framework. Mixed by Bill Schnee, and mastered by Doug Sax at The Mastering Lab. Photography by Paul.

When The Moon's Behind the Clouds

I Will Follow You;Still Hear You Calling; Wooden Bench; MoonBehind The Clouds;Under My Skin And In My Blood; Spoon Logic; Fall In Love With Me; Good To See You Again; Where Did I Fall Down;Over My Dead Body; You Are

Recorded at Ground One Studios, in Paul’s house, from December of1990 through February of1992, this project stands as one of the bookends of Paul’s
long recording history. Never one to shy away from vulnerability, Paul exposed his own soul in hopes of reaching those behind the cloud of discouragement. The songs were penned when Paul was hospitalized for an extended period of time for
infirmities of the body, (herniated l-4/L5 disc) and a broken heart. His passion for a deeper relationship with Christ was once again revealed in his poetic lyrics.
Rallying around Paul under the abnormal circumstances, Don Harris, (Bass, Keys and Guitar), Rod Lincoln, (Drums and Percussion) and Eric Elwell, (Engineer), made this project what it is, authentically transparent and powerful beyond music and lyrics.
Mixed by Dan Garcia, assisted by John Hendrickson and mastered by Doug Sax at The Mastering Lab in Hollywood, the recording is dreamyand lush, but open and exposed. The cover photograph by Skip Heitzig and Jenanne Jenkins, sets the visual tone for what’s inside.

Recorded in 1995, at Ground One Studios, in Paul’s house. From the beginning of his career, Paul had always been asked for recordings with just his voice and acoustic guitar. “Unplugged” is a term for raw recording with no effects, equalization or overdubs. In this unbound landscape, with his 1926 000-45 Martin as his companion, Paul sketches his songs out and takes you on a journey through new and old classic songs in his private world.

Resonate

Resonate; To Be With You; Now Is The Time; Thankful Surrender; Out Of The Depths; Down The Road; I’ll Live For You; I Am Persuaded; Daily Bread; Shallow Water; Free

Recorded in 1996 at Ground One Studios, in Paul’s house. After nearly ten years of
planting and establishing Heartland Community Church, in
Overland Park, Kansas, Paul felt it would be fun to record a
handful of the many songs that he had written while serving as
the worship leader. There’s a little bit of everything from rock
to reggae to jazz and ballads. Original worship songs, not CCLI
remixes.

I Will Lead The Way; Finish Strong; For Me To Live; Of Crimson
And Gold; Grey Sky Of Blue; When You Whispered Goodnight.
Recorded at Ground One Studios, in Paul’s house, between 1999-2001, this project was the other bookend to “When The Moon’s Behind The Clouds.” This work of art is poignant with continued attention to vulnerability and authenticity. From the mysterious and passionate “The Only Way To You Is Through” to the haunting, “When You Whispered Goodnight,” Paul’s songs will serpentine through your soul from the celebrations of life to the heartache of divorce and loss of his father. "Fly On Sweet Angel" is a dynamic song crafted for both of Paul's daughter's weddings.
Accompanied by a 28 page booklet, Paul couples his love for black and white, sepia tone photography to enhance the visual power of his lyrics. Paul is, once again, joined by long time friends Phil Keaggy, Don Harris, Kevin Rogers, Steve George, Jay Pfeifer, Rod Lincoln, Tommy Walker, Dan Garcia, Marsh Shamburger, who, along with new
friends Hal Melia, Kuk Harrel and Carmen Hernandes, to compose a
print of God’s grace for the heart.
